you are my wild

There has been some buzz around the internet about a photography blog called you are my wild. It's just a few weeks old and its fantastic. The blog is a collaboration of 14 photographers who have agreed to take portraits of their children each week. I love how the photos really capture the spirit of childhood - run around, goof off, nap, and do it all again. It's completely wonderful. Also, could the title of this project be any cooler? You are my wild. Simple and whimsical! I can't get enough.

3,6,9

The song 3,6,9 by Cat Power makes me crave sunshine. Memphis has been dark and stormy lately, which is getting a little depressing. The minute I play this song I daydream of summer and leisure bike rides and it turns my whole day around.  Click here to download!

meatball and veggie soup

Nothing much is going on around here besides the fact that I am almost done with my senior thesis (yay!) and that I'm feeling a little under the weather. When I feel sick all I want is tea, soup, and Netflix. Luckily, I have the most delicious soup recipe and I swear it cures all things. My aunt originally made me this soup when I visited her in Austin and I have not stopped making it since. It's so easy and I bet you three bucks that you already have all the ingredients on hand!

Ingredients:
-1 T of oil
-2 finely chopped garlic cloves
-2 T of freshly grated ginger
-4 cups of chicken broth
-meatballs of your choosing*
-1 or 2 freshly grated carrots
-2 green onions (thinly sliced)
-2 stalks of celery (thinly sliced)
-1/2 cup of bok choy (thinly sliced)
-1 package udon noodles or brown rice*
-salt and pepper to taste

*I use Nate's mushroom meatless meatballs - I'm not a vegetarian I just think they are delicious. Since these meatballs tend to be a little smaller I usually use 5 meatballs per serving.
**I put udon noodles or brown rice because the original recipe calls for udon noodes but I try to make a healthy swap and use brown rice instead.

In a large pot add the oil and sauté the garlic and ginger until fragrant - usually about 1 minute. Add the chicken stock and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and stir in meatballs, carrots, green onions, celery, and bok choy. Simmer 10-15 minutes or until veggies are tender. Serve the soup over udon noodles or brown rice.

Feel free to play with the recipe until it is to your liking! Once I used mushroom stock and added sauteed mushrooms and hot sauce to the mix - it was delicious. Just work with it till it works for you :)

Do Small Things With Great Love

As a child I loved going to school on February 14th for the sole reason of exchanging valentines. I can still remember the best valentine I ever received - an envelope filled with candy that had a hand drawn glitter airplane on it. After school my sister and I would have friends over to decorate valentines and eat sweets. I was taught growing up that valentines day was about being with the people you love the most and letting them know you care. It is still one of my favorite holidays for that reason. So remember that today should be about the love you feel for the people in your life! Well, today is also about chocolate because who doesn't want an excuse to eat lots of chocolate (or homemade gingerbread cookies your mom shipped you because she has been and always will be the best valentine... sorry Luke!)

What will I be doing on this lovely day? Missing my family and boyfriend but appreciating the wonderful people around me. Eating truffles for dinner. Listening to The Lumineers album on repeat because I think its so beautiful. Now go show the ones you care about some love :)

Friday Jam

After a long lived hiatus my Friday Jam series is back! The other night Luke told me to listen to the song Stars by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals because according to him "it is girly and you'd like it." Well... I do like it. The first few lines are breath taking. Enjoy.

* Please note - I'm working on getting a music player in blogger. It's hard because most of them are outdated and won't work. Anyhow... for now enjoy a free download of the song! If you all like this better than I can keep doing the free downloads. Just let me know!
